The most renowned member of the Bellini family of painters, Giovanni Bellini was considered one of the great pioneers of Venetian style of painting, championing a more detailed style and a sumptuous range of color that served as an influence for the great Venetian painters of the age such as Giorgione and Titian. This picture displays Bellini’s masterful pallette-while the subject displays a disgruntled face, he nevertheless appears ennobled thanks to the Bellini’s use of a beautiful deep yellow light. The figure appears to be almost golden, as the light creates a visual harmony that bathes across the subjects face and accentuates the intricate accents of his tunic.
