Remembering Jean Antoine Watteau
Jean Antoine Watteau turned 326 this past Sunday, and we’ve put together an image retrospective of this seminal figure of the French Rococo age, who pioneered the wildly popular fête galante (“gallant party”) genre that would be later be embraced by the ensuing generation of painters in 18th century France and define the lavish frivolity of the upper class during the reign of the infamous Louis XV.
